5 Things We Learned - Week 1

1A

1. Florida State is still struggling

Most everyone thought Arizona would be competitive but you would hope FSU could at least keep this game close. Yet, the Wildcats made quick work of the Seminoles and rolled, 34-7. After 10 yards on 17 attempts, Florida State may want to fix their rushing game first.

2. Colorado State vs Colorado needs to happen...every season

We knew this would be a fun series, but a four overtime thriller to start of season 132 is incredibly promising. This rivalry seems to be just beginning.

3. USC could be in trouble

As mentioned on Friday's podcast, ez37 has been to a level 5 bowl in every season since 109. However, they really struggled to beat an average Michigan State squad today. The Spartans out-gained the Trojans 412 to 350. If not for a turnover and a punt return for a touchdown, USC would be off to a 0-1 start.

4. Florida is really good

I had a feeling that Oklahoma would struggle today but the Gators flat out put on a show, winning 59-20. Potter's squad outscored Florida 49-7 in the second half. Florida should roll through the rest of non-conference and has great potential to finish undefeated. This is easily a National Championship contender after today's performance.

5. Houston is back & TCU is next

The Cougars smacked in-state rival, Texas A&M by a score of 54-27. That performance included over 600 yards of offense against a very solid Big 12 team.

TCU probably isn't on anyone else's radar but consider this: they scored 62 points against the legendary nelsonba25. I definitely want to see more but TCU looks primed for a 5-0 non-conference start and should win many of their conference games.

1AA

1. William & Mary is for real

If you doubted the return of dukelegend to the elite stage of Wilkinson 1AA, look no further than today's game against Howard. This is a Howard program that has won the MEAC for five consecutive seasons. Dukelegend's defense held the Bison to only 300 yards and forced Paul Brown to complete less than 40%.

2. Cal Poly will upset one major program before the end of the season

Jacksonville State is easily one of the most talented programs in the country...especially on the offensive side. The Gamecocks have had over 8,000 yards in each of the past two seasons. Yet, Cal Poly limited husker's team to simply 15 points and 340 yards. Chrondon probably doesn't make any deep runs this season, but they are certainly capable of one big upset.

3. Drake is back

This should have been Northern Iowa's game yet they couldn't move the ball against the Bulldogs. Justin Todd led the Drake offense with 60% completion percentage, 4 TD's and 338 yards. They have Savannah State and Georgia Southern looming, but this was a great way to start the season.

4. Jacksonville needs tweaking

The Dolphins entered the season as a top program, capable of making a run at the NC. Yet, they struggled with SIMAI coached, Alabama State, winning only by a score of 31-21. Nothing statistically really popped today but this close score against such an average opponent, is very alarming.

5. Montana State has officially fallen

After four straight playoff appearances, including one trip to the second round, Montana State has missed the past two playoffs. Now, they are getting run over by SIM programs. Today's, 44-23, loss to UMass does not bode well for a program that once had much promise.
