The regular season for Wilkinson 131 has come and gone. Soon, conference champions will be crowned and bowl games will be determined. While we wait for the conclusion of our conference championships, it's time to reward those individual players whose success should not go unnoticed. Without further ado, let's announce this season's 1A awards.
Billy Beane award - Awarded to the most analytically efficient quarterback
Adrian Mason - Michigan
Mason completed 63% of his 468 passing attempts. He was 11th in passing yards with 4,281 and 2nd in passing TD's with 47. Yet, his 468 passing attempts wasn't even good enough for the top 25. In fact, he threw 62 fewer passes than 25th. That's a lot of production with not many attempts. Throw in the fact that he did this against Oklahoma, Colorado, Texas and Ohio State, and it's incredibly impressive.
Not Awags award - Awarded to the most analytically efficient running back
Eugene Phillips - Ohio State
Phillips finished 2nd in the country in rushing yards with 2,827. He averaged 6.6 yards per carry and finished 2nd in the country in rushing touchdowns with 29. However, he wasn't just effective in the running game, he was very effective catching the football. He added 74 receptions, 764 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns.
Awags & gt_deuce award - Awarded to the most analytically efficient wide receiver
Paul Barger - Alabama
It's very difficult to give this to anyone other than the sophomore out of Auburn. Barger had 108 receptions for 1,842 receiving yards and 19 touchdowns. Meaning 17% of his receptions ended in a touchdown! Additionally, he averaged 17.1 yards per reception and had 887 yards after catch. NFL teams should take notice because Barger sure seems like the next Julio Jones!
Henry Short Award - Awarded to the offensive player of the year, and most likely to be ignored by NFL teams and end up in the joint, shortly after posting in 7 consecutive Wilkinson Central shows.
Fred Lane - Houston
We can't have an awards post without mentioning Lane. The previous record for most receptions in a season at the 1A level was 287...Lane had 390 receptions. Tack on 3,790 receiving yards and you have one incredible receiving weapon. Unfortunately, he only had 8 touchdowns on the year and that lowers his efficiency ratings.
Jadaveon Clowney Award - Awarded to the best defensive player, who probably should have played more games but sat out because he was tired.
David Smith - Oklahoma
Smith started 5 games and piled up 14 sacks, which was good enough for a 14th place tie. He is one of only two players to rank in the top 25 (sacks) and start fewer than 13 games. The other being William Cohen of Army. Had Smith started all 13 games, he would have been on track for 36 sacks...setting the 1A record.
Marc Brunell Award - Awarded to the defensive player who did the best job of making the opposing QB resemble Marc Brunell, and made the opposing coach scream, "STOP THROWING THAT DIRECTION!"
Bryan Wagner - North Carolina
Wagner finished fourth in the country in interceptions with 8, and tied for 9th in passing deflections with 20. He tacked on 1 sack, three forced fumbles and led the country in tackles with 116.
