Jabbering JAG 131.4 (Draft Day)
Since tonight is Draft night and we are all busy doing that I am sure. I wanted to take this opportunity to present the conversation I had with phimutau. A long-time coach at Texas State.
Name: Stephen Hamilton Current Location: Saint Jo, Tx
Age: 38 Favorite Sport(s): Football hands down!! Basketball a distant second. Favorite Team(s): Texas A&M (all sports), Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavs, Texas Rangers Favorite Level in GD: D1AA Why did you join Wilkinson: NCAA Football for the playstation was no longer being made and I needed a football fix. In spring of 2015, I got a promotional email from WIS to come and join again after an 8 year hiatus. I had previously joined in 2007, but only played 2 seasons. What do you like most about this world/what keeps you here: When I first came back in 2015 I just joined the same world I had played in back in 2007. It just happened to be Wilkinson. I was going through the forums and discovered CJ's podcast. I was hooked and moved up to D1AA as soon as I could. The comradery, content, and friendships I have made are what keep me in Wilkinson. I also have a loyal personality type, so I can't see myself leaving Texas State. I love coaching in Texas and it is in a great recruiting spot. What do you like least about this world: I honestly do not have a complaint about Wilkinson. I love the challenge it brings and the increased population has definitely helped with that. Toughest coach for you to beat in Wilkinson: That's a tough question. I wish I could see a list of records vs the coaches I have faced. Just like most, I have had a hard time beating the guys that are on the list of Wilkinson D1AA National Champs. Also, I know my record vs justaguy is 7-3, but those three losses were all conference championship games where we were facing each other for the second time that season. I would definitely put him in that category. Biggest rival coach in Wilkinson: justaguy without a doubt. The aforementioned 3 conference championship losses really put me in rival mode when we face Portland State. Philosophy when putting together non-conf games: I used to try to schedule a couple of random users and then have 3 sims for the other games. I decided to jump in on the SOS challenge in season 121 or 122, whenever it was created by naskin. I had never really challenged myself like that before, so I didn't know what to think about it at first. Looking back on it, I think it is one of the best moves I have ever made. It forces me to really bring my A game and I feel it has made me a better coach. I have won each each tier I have been in, including the top tier. I have also been relegated a few times. It's definitely a humbling experience when you make the top tier and go 0-3. What drew you to the conference you're in: Being born and raised in Texas, I was on the search for Texas teams from the start. I started out in D3 at McMurry in Abilene, TX. I was there for 5 seasons. I was happy with staying there until I heard about the content at D1AA. So, I moved to D2 for one season at West Georgia and then took the jump to D1AA the following season. Texas State was open, so I jumped at the chance. The conference had no bearing at that time. What drew you to your current team: see above Why have you been there as long as you have: They are in my favorite division in my favorite state. There really haven't been any other locations or schools that have enticed me. However, I would like to do a complete rebuild somewhere someday. Do you plan on leaving anytime soon: I do not plan on going anywhere anytime soon. The fact that I have a second ID in D1A (saintjo), makes me think I will be here for the long haul, that is until I get the hankering to do a complete sim rebuild.
I would like to thank phimutau for his time and his answers.
