San Luis Obispo, CA - Cal Poly didn't miss a beat with their new head coach as they overpowered Southern-Baton Rouge and defeated them 55-17. Jacob Aguirre passed for 102 yards and threw one touchdown for the Mustangs. Harold Alexander rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown. Mark Porter also rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown for the Mustangs. Randy Dalton passed for 196 yards, threw one touchdown and two interceptions for the Jaguars. Lester Griffith added 58 yards.

Moraga, CA - St. Mary's used an aerial attack to defeat Morehead State by a score of 28-13. The Gaels started off the first half slow but finished the second half strong by scoring 21 points. Thomas Stanley passed for 305 yards and threw for four touchdowns for the Gaels. Roy Barnett rushed for 43 yards. Charles Myers passed for 179 yards for the Eagles. Brian Cantu rushed for 150 yards.

Greensboro, NC - Looking like the favorite to win the championship this year Northern Arizona crushes NC A&T by a score of 65-12. This game was never close as the Lumberjacks cruised. Donald Robinson passed for 256 yards and threw for two touchdowns for the Lumberjacks. Marvin Whitehead added 95 yards rushing. Wayne Jones passed for 167 yards and threw five interceptions for the Aggies. Angel Smith added 119 yards rushing.

San Marcos, TX - Texas State used a strong second half by outscoring La Salle 14-0 in getting the victory 27-3. The Bobcats left off where they did last year by showing off the balanced offense that led them to the playoffs last year. Peter O'Donell passed for 173 yards for the Bobcats. William Porter added 90 yards rushing and a touchdown. Chester Mullins passed for 123 yards for the Explorers. Jesse Strickland added 59 yards rushing.

Huntsville, TX - Sam Houston State defeated Hampton by the score of 28-6. The Bearkats are going to need their young quarterback to take better care of the ball as he threw two interceptions. The young defense was also gashed by 151 rushing yards. Clyde Henson passed for 359 yards, threw three touchdowns, and two interceptions for the Bearkats. Earl Day added 48 yards rushing. Walter White passed for 219 yards and threw two interceptions for the Pirates. Steven Lowe added 145 yards rushing.
